Mastering Mei Ezhuthukkal : Mei Magic With Bommi

What You Will Need

  • 7 paper cups (plain preferably)

  • Markers, crayons, or paint

  • Scissors or craft knife

How to Make It

  • Take one paper cup and draw Bommi’s face and traditional attire at the top — this will be your top cup.

  • Color another paper cup and write the letters ற், ன், ள் spaced around the cup. This will be your base cup

  • Take the rest of the cups and reduce the height of the cups progressively so you can stack them on top of the other.

  • On each cup write three letters, one each from vallinam, mellinam and idaiyinam respectively. Take care to maintain the same spacing as the previous cup

  • Stack the cups one over the other and we are done!

How to Use It

  • Randomly rotate the cups so the Tamil letters appear mixed up.

  • Challenge children to spell out letters in a category – vallinam or mellinam or idaiyinam by rotating and aligning the letters correctly.

  • Alternatively, dismantle all the cups and let children re-stack them in the correct order of letters.
