The world has shrunk, as they say. We travel the world, move away from our base, settle down elsewhere, expose our children to 'world-class' education, experience various culture and more. In that pursuit, the language of convenience becomes our second language. It’s a story many of us know all too well.

The same happened with me. My mother tongue is Tamil and I have had the privilege of learning Tamil at school and hence had the luxury of reveling in its magnificent beauty. Tamil is a glorious language and I did not want my daughter to miss out on this beauty. Since she doesn't have the opportunity to learn the language at school, I took it upon myself to teach her Tamil at home. When my daughter turned 3, I started teaching her our beautiful mother tongue, Tamil. At home, we speak Tamil and watch Tamil shows, so her vocabulary was decent. Slowly but surely, she began reading small words and sentences. But then I hit a roadblock—there weren’t many resources that used simple Tamil she could easily understand. Most Tamil storybooks felt too advanced for kids without formal Tamil schooling.

Traditional learning materials like books, audio stories, videos and other resources can sometimes be too advanced. This poses a challenge and creates a sense of disconnect for young minds, particularly for those with limited vocabulary or those who haven’t had the chance to learn the language through formal education.
